Interview with a professional

On Friday April 9, 2010 I had the chance to interview a drug and alcohol counselor from California. The interview was very informative on how much counselors are there for their clients. I asked Mrs X what the most rewarding part of her job was. I was sure that I already knew the answer. I was right, the most rewarding part of her job was reuniting women with their children and watching the light return to the lives of not only the women but their families as well. It takes a person with a good heart and a strong desire to help others to be a good counselor.

Sources I will use to write my paper

Taleff, Michael. "Dawn of a New Era (Part 2)." Counselor Magazine 20 Jan 2010: n. pg . Web. 5 Apr 2010.

The information in this source is focused on the moment the client starts to process his or her therapy. This is the time when lights seem to turn on. I will use this article as an example of a therapist being rewarded for their hard work. Another part of this article focuses on new research. The patient client relationship is important for drug and alcohol therapy. The client needs to know that the therapist can somehow relate to what is being discussed during sessions. Upon further research I feel confident that researchers will find that counselors need to be personally matched to the personality of their client. I will use this as a factual article on the need for further research.

Champagne, Cyndi. Personal Interview. 5 Apr 2010

My interview with Cyndi will be used in my article to help support my thesis. Becoming a drug and alcohol counselor is a career that passes all expectations for reward. Cyndi has been involved with the recovery community for five years now. The number of women that she has helped I cannot begin to count. I myself am one of the women Cyndi has forever changed. Personal experience is not talked about too much in the argument for this career being rewarding. The success of the people who are being counseled greatly depends on the success of the counselor. Cyndi is a shining star that continues to give support and help to everyone she encounters. This interview will help me because Cyndi is my inspiration.

Anonymous, . "THE TRUTH ABOUT "REHAB" & DRUG ADDICTION. " Scholastic Choices 1 Apr. 2009: Children's Module, ProQuest. Web. 5 Apr. 2010.

This article gives a wide variety of information in an organized and compact fashion. I will use the straight to the point style of the article to push forward my arguments. The article asks questions such as “What is Drug Addiction?” I would not have thought to take the time to answer such a basic question. This article will help me stay focused on some basic things about drug and alcohol addiction that I may have otherwise over looked. I like the statistics that are given about the number of people who need treatment. It is surprising how many Americans suffer from one kind of drug addiction or another. The end of this article has a sidebar comment about critical thinking. Two very important questions were posed. I will include the questions in my paper.

Group on Substance Use Disorders, Kleber HD, Weiss RD, Anton RF, Rounsaville BJ, George TP, Strain EC, Greenfield SF, Ziedonis DM, Kosten TR, Hennessy G, O'Brien CP, Connery HS, and American Psychiatric Association Steering Committee on Practice Guidelin. "PART A: Treatment Recommendations for Patients With Substance Use Disorders. " The American Journal of Psychiatry : PRACTICE GUIDELINE for the Treatment of Patients With... 163.8 (2006): 5-82. Research Library Core, ProQuest. Web. 5 Apr. 2010.

Pro Quest provided to be one of the most useful tools I have learned this year. On Pro Quest I found an article by the American Journal of Psychiatry. This article is from a very reliable source. I will use this article for a wide variety of facts. I am presented with information about counselors from other fields as well as the drug and alcohol field. A good amount of information is provided on each subject discussed. Among the subjects discussed in this article is a topic on Community reinforcement. Psychosocial treatment is sometimes forgotten in typical drug and alcohol counseling. I found facts on depressive disorders that commonly co-occur in community populations. I would have forgotten to mention the impact society has on the recovering addict. A solid recovery community is just as important as a good counselor.

Wikipedia

Twelve-Step Program

I chose this Wikipedia site because it had a direct overview of the program of the Twelve-step program. This is an important aspect of recovery as everything is based of of these principals. Without following the twelve steps an addict has no chance of recovery. Being able to practice the twelve-steps of this program give a person whom is new in recovery the steps to take on the journey. Sobriety is a gift that only the lucky addicts and alcoholics receive. It is important to have the basic principals broken down step by step.

Professional Journal

Counselor
The magazine for Addiction Professionals

This website is extraordinarily helpful. The website is set up in a very organized fashion. I can pull up issues that I want to see by the month they were published. After pulling up the magazine issue you see a brief description of each of the articles. This is very helpful and time efficient. When you see an article of interest you simply select the article and it is displayed in it's entire form. I will use this website allot. They really thought through the set up of the magazine on line.

Blog

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Blog

The Brandywine Rehab Blog is a good resource for interviews and information. This blog gives a bunch of information about the employees. This will be helpful to me because I will get a better understanding about how a facility like this is run. Being able to communicate with the other counselors on their blogs will be a great tool for conducting interviews.
